Coliba

24 Apr 2023

Vitol has supported Coliba, a plastic recycling and waste management company, since 2019. Coliba’s goal is to increase Ghana’s recycling rate from 2% at today’s levels, to 92% by 2030. Their services cover plastic waste recovery, recycling as well providing digital solutions to both educate and monitor impact.

Vitol’s grants have enabled the purchase of an industrial mobile hydraulic baler machine to help with the challenge of transporting waste plastics. The machine not only helped cut the cost of transporting by about 35% but also created 3 jobs for Baler operations working on a shift.

Coliba were also able to set up 3 ‘buy-back’ kiosks at beaches to assist with the issue of coastal pollution through Vitol’s contributions. These buy-back kiosks have resulted in 29858kg being collected as well employing over 200 waste pickers to help clear the beaches.

“To put in perspective what the Vitol funding has enabled Coliba to do, it has created the first-ever chain of reaction where grassroots community leaders and members are working together to solve the plastic waste challenge in their communities. Today we are seeing more and more centers being set up and being championed by community leaders as a result of the first step taken by Vitol to set up Ghana’s first plastic deposit centers”
